MAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LOSES LATE TO LAURIER

Box Score The McMaster women’s basketball team went down to the wire versus the Laurier Golden Hawks but dropped a 76-72 contest on Saturday afternoon and is still looking for its first win of 2013.

The Marauders opened the game strong behind some long-range shooting from Danielle Boiago and Abby Hurd and jumped in front 10-2.  But behind some scrappy defense Laurier was able to get back in the game and the first quarter ended with McMaster leading 20-17.

Laurier won the second quarter 22-15 behind some 3-point shooting of its own from Amber Hillis and Courtney Bruce and entered the intermission leading 39-35.

Starting the third like they started the game, the Marauders erased the deficit by scoring the first six points and then the lead went back and forth with Mac up 55-53 by the end of the quarter.

The fourth quarter continued to be a see-saw battle, but the Hawks took advantage of some turnovers and made some clutch free throws in the late stages to close out the win.

Top Marauder shooter on the day was Danielle Boiago, who scored 17, while Abby Hurd chipped in 16 off the bench and was the McDonald’s Big Mac of the game.  Hailey Milligan finished with a double-double of 15 points and 17 rebounds.

Laurier sparkplug Doreen Bonsu had 13 to lead a balanced Hawk attack.

The Maroon now head to Guelph on Wednesday, January 9th for a 6 PM game, that is available live on McMaster campus radio station CFMU 93.3 FM.
