Box Score Despite having to play without its captain and starting point guard, the McMaster women's basketball team went on the road and picked up a big 70-54 win over the Warriors.
With Vanessa Bonomo out after being injured in the team's previous game, the Marauders needed everyone to step up in her absence. Fortunately, their opponent was injury-riddled and was only able to dress nine players for the Saturday afternoon contest.
Looking for its first OUA win the Warriors started the game strong, grabbing the early lead. It took a late McMaster run before the Marauders caught up and after one it was a one-point Mac advantage at 18-17.
The second quarter went much better for the Maroon and a combination of second-chance points and full-court pressure allowed the lead to grow to 38-29 at the half.
Already short-handed, fouls started to become an issue for Waterloo and McMaster extended its margin to as much as 15 in the third period before ending the quarter with a lead of 51-38.
Credit the Warriors for not quitting, and a Waterloo burst of three straight scores midway through the fourth quarter got the Mac lead down to nine at 55-46. Coming out of a timeout, the Marauders got consecutive hoops from Liz Burns to bump up the lead and the Warriors could get no closer.
Hailey Milligan scored 18 and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead McMaster, with Danielle Boiago and Liz Burns chipping in 15 and 12 points respectively.
Now at 6 and 7 in the OUA, Mac heads to Windsor this coming Wednesday to take on the undefeated Lancers.
