MARAUDERS DROP HEARTBREAKER TO BADGERS IN OVERTIME

Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster women's basketball team hosted the Brock Badgers on Wednesday night that resulted in a loss for the Marauders in overtime. Despite scoring a basket with just two seconds left on the clock, McMaster was unable to soldify the win in overtime as the final score was 73-64.

The first quarter started out with the Badgers getting on the board first, but it would be a deep two point shot from McMaster's Hailey Milligan to get the Marauders on the board as well. With both teams trading points, Brock held a slight lead, despite a three-pointer from Taylor Chiarot and it would be Marauder Jaklynn Nimec that would tie it up at seven with another deep two.

Point guard Vanessa Bonomo would push the Marauders to their first lead of the game with a three-pointer at 10-9, but the Badgers would find a way to maintain the lead, going into the second quarter 17-13.

Three minutes into the second, each team would have scored just three points each for Brock's lead to stay at four at 20-16. Two key lay-ups by Milligan would finally tie it up at 20 for the Marauders. Forced to call a timeout, the Badgers would come off that earning back a five-point lead.

A three-pointer from Bonomo would get the Marauders back within two and a jumper from Chiarot following that would tie it back up at 27 all. McMaster would earn the lead in the dying minutes of the quarter 31-29, but a deep two-pointer made by the Badgers at the half-time buzzer would leave it all tied up at 31 heading into the second half.

The majority of the third quarter would see low-scoring for both teams and it would take the Marauders some time to get warmed up again, as the Badgers took a five point lead early in at 36-31. Two foul shots from Bonomo would put the Marauders within three later on.

With two minutes to go, the scoring would open up from both teams, with McMaster finally tying it up at 40 with a three-pointer from point guard Bonomo. A lay-up to follow that from forward Milligan would put McMaster ahead for the first time since the end of the second and the home team would earn the four-point lead going into the fourth and final quarter.

Brock would be the first to score in the fourth around the seven minute mark to get within two and would eventually tie up at at 49. The Marauders found themselves build the four-point lead back with three minutes to go at 53-49 with baskets from Chiarot and Stephanie Truelove. McMaster's lead started to diminish with less than two minutes to go, but would stay up by two at 55-53.

After Brock called a timeout with 55 seconds left, they would score the jumper to tie it at 55. Within the next minute, both teams would make some foul shots to find the Marauders up by one with 10 seconds on the clock. Then, the Badgers would pull out a three-pointer from no where, stopping the clock at 2.1 seconds to go up 58-56.

Seeming that there was no hope left, the Marauders wouldn't go down without a fight. Devising an inbounding plan to tie it up, captain Chiarot would be looked upon to take her team in to overtime and she would do just that, making a lay-up at the buzzer to send the game into an extra five minutes.

Overtime would see both teams foul, and with bonus in affect, the Badgers would connect with their foul shots and shut down the Marauders offence to take a large lead. The Marauders were unable to become effective in overtime, in part due to Milligan fouling out with four minutes to go. The Badgers would go on to win it 73-64.

Bonomo was McMaster's high scorer with 15 points on the night. Milligan was named the Big Mac Player of the Game for her 12 points and eight rebounds and Chiarot also added 12 points for the Marauders. She was the only Marauder to record the double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds as well.

For the Badgers, Nicole Rosenkranz was the game-high scorer with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Emily MacKay had 14 points, Andrea Polischuk added 11 more for Brock and Samantha deJong grabbed 10 rebounds and scored another six points.

The Marauders take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
