MARAUDER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BACK IN WIN COLUMN

Box Score The McMaster women’s basketball team turned in one of its most complete efforts and defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 64-56 in Toronto Friday evening.

The win by the Marauders snapped a four game losing streak.

The Marauders applied full court pressure on the Blues from the opening tip and it gave Toronto fits as the press resulted in numerous turnovers, which McMaster converted to points.  At the end of the First quarter McMaster held a 21-18 lead.

It was almost a flawless second quarter for the Maroon as Toronto continued to struggle and could only score one lone basket, while the Marauders built their advantage to 34-20 at halftime.

The third quarter has often been a thorn in the side of McMaster, but continuing to push the tempo, the Mac lead actually grew by a point and the Marauders led by 53-38 heading into the final period.

Trailing by 15, the Blues had to score fast and not allow McMaster any points to complete any hopes of a comeback.   The Marauders took the foot off the gas in the fourth quarter, content to milk the clock and protect the lead, but Toronto made things interesting and climbed to within four points with just over a minute to go.  Some clutch free throws in the final minute by rookie Danielle Boiago allowed McMaster to maintain the lead and finish with the eight-point win.

Boiago was the top shooter for McMaster with 20, while Hailey Milligan was a force inside with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks.

McMaster will play its final game of the OUA interlock on Saturday when it travels to take on the Ryerson Rams.  Game time at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre is 6 p.m.
