Hamilton, Ont. - On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, the McMaster Marauders men's rugby team took on the Brock Badgers in an OUA Quarter-final playoff match on Back Ten Field.
About ten minutes into the game, McMaster had their first opportunity come from veteran Cam Stones (Whitby, Ont.). The Social Science major would make a run down the middle of the field and break a few tackles along the way, but would get called for not releasing the ball in time. The Badgers would get the ball back in their possession.
Later on as the Marauders continued to work in Brock's end, Andrew Ferguson (Mississauga, Ont.) would get a chance to get the go ahead points. He would unforunately miss the uprights from a very far distance for the score to remain 0-0.
Just before half time it would be Brock's chance to get on the board. An obstruction call on the goal line would save the Marauders from the deficit and the half would end scoreless despite McMaster putting on major pressure on the Badgers throughout the first 40 minutes.
In the second, McMaster would work hard to keep the ball in Brock's end, and would eventually force the Badgers to commit a penalty. This time, Ferguson would make no mistake, connecting for the penalty goal to give the home team a 3-0 lead.
That lead wouldn't last for long though as minutes later, Dylan Mundy (Sutton, Ont.) would make a huge run down the field, breaking tackle after tackle, and finding the try zone after finishing the run off down the sideline. Zack Lamacraft (Pickering, Ont.) would miss the convert so leave McMaster down by two.
It wouldn't take long for the Badgers to march down the field and get another chance in McMaster's end. Fortunately for the home team, Brock would make a big turnover to keep the Marauders chances alive.
Throughout the second half, the Marauders would have trouble getting out of their own end and with a penalty goal kicked by Lamacraft, the Badgers would earn the OUA Quarter-final win and a chance to move on to the OUA semifinals on the weekend. The final score would read 8-3.
McMaster ended the regular season 5-3 and finished the playoffs with a 0-1 record.
