WOMEN'S SOCCER OPEN UP 2011 SEASON WITH 2-0 WIN OVER WINDSOR

Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster women's soccer team earned their first win of the 2011 season over the Windsor Lancers with a score of 2-0 at Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Marauders Julia Maiolino (North York, Ont.) and Hayley Marler (Ancaster, Ont.) were the two goal scorers of the match.

The first half saw the Marauder goalkeeper Brittany Duffey (Markham, Ont.) make some keys saves early on to keep McMaster in the game. Ball possession was even for both teams throughout the first, with breakaways from both the Lancers and the Marauders. McMaster forwards Marler and Natalie Brace (Warwickshire, Eng.) both had opportunities to score early on.

In the second, the Marauders put on the pressure keeping the ball in the Lancer's half before Melanie Van Der Hoop (Oakville, Ont.) was given a yellow card in the 50th minute.

As play evened out, Marler found herself out on her own on a breakaway around the 61st minute but couldn't capitalize against Lancer goalkeeper Rebecca Singer (Amhertsburg, Ont.) keeping the score at 0-0.

In the 75th minute of the match, midfielder Maiolino took a lobbed shot just inside the left corner of the 18-yard box over Windsor's keepers head to put the Marauders ahead. This is Maiolino's first goal as a Marauder after coming off a torn ACL in 2010.

After ten minutes of the Lancers finally starting to put on the pressure, Marler saw a chance for another breakaway, taking on Windsor's goal keeper and beating her for the second goal of the match. The veteran forward helped reinforce the Marauder win in the 85th minute. Defender Cristina Leonardelli (Woodbridge, Ont.) was solid in the back for McMaster throughout the match.

The Marauders take on the Western Mustangs on Sunday at 1pm looking for their second win of the 2011 season.
