A fourth-year swimmer from Barrie, Alexa Vanommen had a strong performance at the Florida International University Winter Invitational meet held in Miami.

Swimming against a field of NCAA athletes, Vanommen captured the gold medal in the 50-metre breaststroke in a time of 1:06.2. She then took the silver medal in the 100-metre breast event , narrowly missing her second gold medal by one-tenth of a second. She was also a member of the 200-M medley relay team that just missed a medal, finishing fourth in the final.

Her performance helped the Marauder women’s swim team to a fourth place finish in the overall meet standings and was a great start to 2013, with OUA and CIS finals on the horizon.
