Ubene put a fitting cap on a breakout fourth year in maroon Saturday, providing what proved to be a vital fifth and final score for the Marauders at the U SPORTS Championship in Kingston.
With the Marauders locked in a battle for national silver with the Guelph Gryphons, who bested the Marauders at the OUA Championship in Hamilton two weeks earlier, the teams ended with identical team totals of 82 points at Fort Henry.
Ubene, who was competing in his first national championship, completed the 10km course in 32:13.1 to finish 34th overall and crucially out-score Guelph’s final scorer, Gavin Hughes, by four spots. That ended up being the deciding tiebreaker which handed silver to the Marauders, and sealed their best finish at the national championship event since winning the title in 1963.
