GUELPH, Ont. — The McMaster Marauders women's basketball team (7-6) put up a valiant effort but, couldn't finish the job in a 73-70 loss to the Guelph Gryphons (10-3) on Wednesday night.
The Marauders showed resilience throughout the game, overcoming a slow start to battle back against the Gryphons, who currently sit at the top of the OUA West standings. Despite a strong defensive effort and contributions from their bench, McMaster couldn't capitalize on their late-game opportunities.
The Marauders trailed by two at halftime but stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring Guelph 21-19 to cut the deficit. McMaster briefly held the lead in the fourth quarter, with an Emily Frankovic (Thornhill, Ont.) three-pointer giving them a two-point advantage. However, the Gryphons responded with a crucial layup and strong free-throw shooting to seal the victory.
Despite a spirited effort from the Marauders' bench, which outscored Guelph's 27-2, the Gryphons' efficiency from the field (47.5 per cent) proved to be the difference.
Cassandra Joli-Cour (Johnstown, Ont.) led McMaster with 14 points and six rebounds, while Emily Frankovic added 13 points, including a triple of key three-pointers. Amy Stinson chipped in with nine points and six boards.
The Marauders return to action next Saturday as they face the Brock Badgers at the Meridian Centre. Women's tip-off is set for 6pm and the men will square off at 8 p.m.
