GUELPH, Ont. — The McMaster Marauders (1-11) pushed the Guelph Gryphons (3-9) to the limit in a thrilling clash on Wednesday night but ultimately fell short, losing 80-78 on the road. The contest saw 15 lead changes and came down to the final seconds, with Guelph's Jack Tunstill hitting a clutch jump shot with just four seconds remaining to secure the win for the Gryphons.
McMaster came out strong in the first quarter, opening with a 7-0 run highlighted by Daniel Graham's (Hamilton, Ont.) three-pointer and Brendan Amoyaw's (Winnipeg, Man.) early dominance. The Marauders held a slim 21-18 lead after 10 minutes. However, Guelph (3-9) responded in the second quarter, trying the game at halftime, 34-34.
The Marauders regained momentum in the third quarter, with Riaz Saliu (Oshawa, Ont.) leading the charge, sinking a three-pointer and perfect free-throw shooting to build a brief lead. Despite their efforts, the Gryphons kept the game within reach.
The fourth quarter delivered edge-of-your-seat action as both teams traded blows. McMaster's Elijah Bethune (Toronto,Ont.) drained a late three-pointer to tie the game at 78 with 15 seconds left, but Tunstill's final shot sealed the victory for Guelph.
Amoyaw led the Marauders with 14 points and six rebounds, while Mike Demagus contributed a game-high 20 points, alongside four assists. Saliu added 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Marauders will look to bounce back next Saturday as they face the Brock Badgers at the Meridian Centre. Women's tip-off is set for 6pm and the men will square off at 8 p.m.
