OTTAWA, Ont. — The McMaster Marauders (2-3-0) defeated the Carleton Ravens (1-4-0) in a nail biter by a score of 36-34.
The game began with a strong defensive series from the Marauders, creating a two-and-out that set the offense up with good field position. The Marauders offense came up with a 68-yard drive in just under four minutes of playing time culminating in a
Keagan Hall (Burlington, Ont.) rushing touchdown. Hall's touchdown is the second rushing touchdown of his career. The Marauders would fail to record the extra point. They led 6-0 early.
Carleton would respond with a long drive of their own. The Ravens put up a 6-play, 84-yard drive that put them into the lead, 7-6 Ravens. The Ravens added to their lead with a punt return touchdown late in the first quarter, 14-6 Ravens.
The Marauders cut into Carleton's lead with a determined drive that saw them march 80-yards up the field, setting up
Michael Horvat's (Hamilton, Ont.) 10-yard field goal, 14-9 Ravens.
Jackson Taylor (Hamilton, Ont.) was an important part of the drive as he had two receptions leading to 43 yards for McMaster.
The maroon stepped up on defense as 5th-year defensive back,
Josh Cumber (Cambridge, Ont.) intercepted Carleton's 2
nd down pass. Unfortunately, McMaster failed to capitalize on the turnover, as they would miss a 41-yard field-goal earning a single point for the rouge, 14-10 Ravens.
The Ravens added another three points with a field goal,17-10 Ravens. McMaster would answer with a monster 75-yard drive that killed nearly five minutes of the quarter. Third-year receiver,
David Bazzo (King City, Ont.) had a significant part of the drive, recording two receptions which gained 42 yards for McMaster. Hall would complete a three-yard touchdown pass to Taylor, tying the game 17-17. McMaster gained an extra two points on a late safety putting them into the lead, 19-17 Marauders.
At half-time, McMaster narrowly held the 19-17 lead. Hall was brilliant recording one rushing and one passing touchdown. Taylor also had an amazing half, gathering four receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown. Third-year receiver,
Everett Reid (Winnipeg, Man.), led the team with four receptions for 63 yards.
As the game resumed, McMaster started with the ball and wasted no time, driving 83 yards in just two minutes. Reid completed a 31-yard reception from Hall, moving them to Toronto's 22-yard line. Hall then found
Jackson Cooling (Burlington, Ont.) for the 22-yard touchdown, 26-17 Marauders.
Carleton responded with a field goal late in the 3
rd quarter, making it a one score game, 26-20 Marauders. The Marauders immediately bounced back with two impressive runs by
Micah Duchene (Brantford, Ont.) setting up the maroon in a prime spot to score. Hall connected with Taylor for his second of the night, giving McMaster some much needed breathing room, 33-20 Marauders.
Carleton quickly responded early in the 4
th quarter with a field goal, making it a 10-point game, 33-23 Marauders. McMaster countered with a field goal of their own in a drive that killed five minutes of the game clock, 36-23, Marauders.
The Ravens applied pressure to the Marauders with a late game drive that resulted in a touchdown, once again, making it a one-score game, 36-30 Marauders. A Carleton safety put the ball back into the hands of the Ravens. Then, the Marauders defense stepped up as
Ethan Stuart (Oakville, Ont.) made a game-saving interception to secure the win for the Marauders.
The Marauders would run out most of the clock before giving up one final safety, effectively ending the game in victory. The maroon pulled off a gutsy 36-34 win and improved to 2-3 on the season.
Next up, the Marauders will rest up during their week 6 bye before facing off against the no. 4 nationally ranked Western Mustangs (3-1) during homecoming at Ron Joyce Stadium on October 5
th.
