HAMILTON – Despite putting up similar numbers in many of the statistical categories, it was the Guelph Gryphons (2-2) that moved to .500 on the season, earning a 21-13 victory over the McMaster Marauders (1-3) at Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win marked the first Guelph victory against McMaster since 2015, when the Gryphons secured a 32-23 win.
The Gryphons got on the board first, recording a rouge on a wide field goal attempt after recovering a McMaster fumble at the mid-point of the opening quarter. The Marauders responded, going 72 yards in twelve plays to set up a final second 10-yard
Michael Horvat field goal to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter. The second frame saw the Gryphons take over on offense, scoring on both drives to hold an 11-3 advantage at the half.
Guelph added another field goal quickly in the third, making the score 14-3 in favour of the visitors. McMaster gained some momentum on the next drive, led by a 28-yard reception by receiver
Jackson Cooling. That play led to McMaster's lone touchdown of the game, when quarterback
Keagan Hall scurried into the end zone for a 6-yard rushing touchdown. The score stood at 14-10 headed into the final quarter.
The Marauders narrowed the lead to one late in the fourth quarter, with a 24-yard field goal by Horvat, but ultimately couldn't stop the Gryphons' offense which found the end zone with just one minute remaining and the game ended 21-13 for Guelph.
McMaster continued to put up big yards on offense, including 257 passing yards. Third-year quarterback
Keagan Hall finished the game 27-35 for 257 yards, in addition to two interceptions.
Brayden Kelly led the Marauders in rushing with 17 carries for 68 yards while Spencer Cooling led the team in receptions with eight for 91 yards.
Owen Hubert had a strong game on defence, finishing with one sack for a loss of nine yards, while
Drake Bodi led McMaster with a team-high 6.5 tackles (five solo, three assisted).
McMaster will now match-up with the #6 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo on Sept. 23 at University Stadium.
