OTTAWA, Ont. - With a berth to the OUA Critelli Cup Final on the line, the McMaster Marauders women's basketball team was looking to upset the #2 seed on the road.
On Wednesday night, the Marauders traveled to face the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa for an OUA semifinal.
Unfortunately, the Ravens proved to be too much for the visitors as they controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Marauders 46-32, to secure a 69-55 final.
Despite keeping it close early, it was the Ravens who made the most of home court advantage early on to lead 20-11after the opening quarter.
Both teams struggled to score in the second frame, combining for just 19 points but, again, it was the Carleton who held the advantage at the break - 32-18.
With just 20 minutes remaining, the Marauders came out of the break rolling, averaging 64.3% from the field in the third quarter. McMaster also went 3-for-5 from three point range to outscore the hosts 25-21. The maroon and grey were within striking distance headed into the final quarter.
The fourth wasn't kind to McMaster as the Marauders tried to hang tough with a strong Ravens team. The gap was too much for the Marauders who were unable to mount a comeback, the victory going to the Ravens.
In her final game in the maroon and grey, the OUA's Most Valuable Player,
Sarah Gates, led the Marauders with 22 points and contributed three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Amy Stinson added ten in the contest.
The loss ends the Marauders' 2022-23 OUA campaign who will now turn to preparations for next season.
