Men’s soccer team season comes to a close with loss against Brock

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Last night's quarterfinal game against the Brock Badgers was a frustrating end to the season for the Marauders men's soccer team. Though they fought hard to come back from an early 2-0 deficit, they weren't able to close the gap, and ended up taking a 3-1 loss.

The Badgers were aggressive right off the bat, pressuring the Marauders defense and forcing turnovers. They created a nightmare for the Marauders in the first 15 minutes. Two goals were scored — one off of a quick sequence from the left side and the other off of a defensive lapse from McMaster. The Marauders slung in an impressive nine shots that half. Soon after, in the 29th minute, they were able to lessen the gap with a goal from forward Amir Shirazi. A deflected McMaster free kick led to a scramble for the ball, which Amir Shirazi quickly shot in beneath the goalie's reach.

Inspired, the Marauders entered the second half hungry for another goal. They played plenty of long balls overhead, trying to advance the ball closer to the net. The Badgers defense, though, was resilient. They were able to stop some dangerous chances from McMaster. The Marauders kept hunting for their tying goal but were ultimately unable to find it. As they went all out in the final few minutes, they took some defensive risks, which the Badgers took advantage of in their 90th minute goal as they brought the lead up to 3-1. The final whistle blew, signalling the unfortunate end to the Marauders' season.

Considering their relatively new team, consisting of a new head coach and many younger players, the Marauders put on an impressive run this season. Although they weren't able to achieve an OUA Championship as they did last year, there were many incredible moments this season that showed their resiliency and mental strength as a team. Some notable performances include those of goalie Ethan Cagalj, who finished second in the league for saves (with 51), and forward Amir Shirazi, who was constantly a threat this season, recording four goals and three assists. Rookie defender Jameel Durhan also played extremely well, with his high IQ and ball control showing a maturity beyond his age. Forward Cristian Alfieri held the scoring record for this year's team, with five goals.

Congratulations to the men's team on their many inspiring performances this season!
