HAMILTON, Ont. - A 30-point first quarter performance was the strong start the McMaster Marauders women's basketball team was in search of to open the Friday night contest. The Marauders earned an 86-71 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks, pushing their record to 12-4 after winning seven straight OUA match-ups.
The Marauders' defence was dominant, holding the visitors to just 15 points in the first quarter and 12 points in the fourth. McMaster held Laurier to just a 37.3 percent shooting average through all four quarters, while also out-rebounding the Golden Hawks 35-25.
On the offense, nine Marauders made a basket in the win, led by 27 points by
Sarah Gates (Newmarket, Ont.). This is Gates' fifth straight game recording 25 points or more. She also registered five rebounds, an assist and a steal to round out her stat line. Also reaching double-digits for McMaster was
Cassie Joli-Coeur (Johnstown, Ont.) who added 12, while rookie,
Jocelyn Newby (Guelph, Ont.), chipped in 11 of the Marauders' 21 points off the bench.
McMaster ended the game shooting 46.8% from the floor and tallied six buckets from beyond the arc.
