The McMaster Marauders took care of business on the road on Thursday night, dropping the Windsor Lancers 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23) for their fourth straight win of the season.
Jessie Nairn led the way for the Marauders with a game-high 17 points, and 15 kills on 51 total attacks to go with four assisted blocks. Third-year middle,
Ellie Hatashita, recorded 15 points in the match, recording nine kills on .500 hitting percentage, with 10 total blocks and six digs for a well-rounded performance. First-year's
Sullie Sundara and
Emma McKinnon recorded 12 kills each, Sundara adding in six total blocks and 15 digs, while McKinnon recorded 14 digs, and ace.
Christina Stratford continued her setting duties, dishing out 30 assists in the match, along with two assisted blocks and a service ace in four sets of action. First-year libero
Hayley Brookes was pivotal on the defensive end, with 12 digs and supporting on the attack with six assists.
Connecting on an average .201 hitting percentage throughout the match, the Marauders turned things around after falling in the first courtesy of a trio of Lancers service aces down the stretch. Things changed swiftly in the second set as the Marauders jumped out to a 9-4 lead after a Nairn kill, assisted block from
Sullie Sundara and
Ellie Hatashita, and a slew of attack errors from the Windsor offence. The score tightened towards the technical timeout with a deadlock at 16-16 with McKinnon making her mark with a pair of kills of her own, but the Marauders responded with seven straight unanswered points exploding to a 23-16 lead on the back of a pair Sundara kills.
With the match tied at one apiece, the stage was set for Nairn to take over - the fifth-year captain showed her prowess as a two-time first-team all-star erupting for seven of her game-high 15 kills in the third set alone. As a team, the Marauders kept faults to only three errors total in the set, with a .342 hitting percentage.
In the final frame, the game looked all but settled when the Marauders took a commanding 13-3 lead, but the Lancers held on for a fight. Ultimating tying the score to 19-19, the two sides exchanged a series of points until McKinnon and Nairn setlted the score with a pair of kills to close out the set and the match.
With the win, the Marauders push their win streak to four games and stay strong in second place in the OUA West Division with a 6-2 record trailing only the Brock Badgers. The team will now look ahead to Sunday afternoon as they return home to Burridge to take on the Waterloo Warriors at 2pm.
