The McMaster Marauders women's soccer team opened their season on Saturday afternoon with an emphatic victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds 6-0 at Ron Joyce Stadium.
Â
The Marauders opened up the scoring midway through the first-half with a rocket of a shot from first-year forward
Alyssa Wheeler that netted into the right side of the net.
Â
Minutes later
Bryanna Caldwell doubled the Marauders leader after the ball fell to her feet in the Thunderbirds 18-yard box. Second-year striker
Megan Mamela made it three goals before half-time on a breakaway, slipping the ball past the left side of the keeper.
Â
In the second-half, the scoring kept coming as Mamela doubled her tally on the night – she led all scorers with a pair of goals to start the season.
Victoria Orfei made good on a penalty shot, after the Thunderbirds defence brought down Wheeler in their box.
Â
Capping off the day, first-year forward
Joelle Chackal dribbled past two-defenders before faking one in the box netting home the Marauders sixth goal of the game, on her birthday no less.

Â
Head Coach,
Miranda Wiley, kick starts her coaching record with a convincing victory in tow, and her squad will look to go up 2-0 on the season tomorrow afternoon as the two teams face-off in their second of a back-to-back at 12pm on Sunday.
