The No. 5 McMaster Marauders football team suffered a tough loss on the road Saturday afternoon to the Windsor Lancers in overtime, 27-24.
Â
Adam Preocanin was 5-for-7 on field goal attempts on the day, including a 48-yard deep conversion.
Â
Andreas Dueck threw 28-for-35 for 308 yards but struggled with three interceptions and four sacks on the day.
Justice Allin led all players with 148 rushing yards on 18 attempts to go with one touchdown, while
David Bazzo was good for 88 receiving yards on seven catches and
Liam Putt added six receptions for 64 yards.
Â
Joe O'Brien and Nate Edwards led the Marauders defence with seven tackles each, Edwards accounting for five tackles solo.
Â
The Lancers got on the board early after a Sam Richardson's field goal attempt. Following a pair of interceptions, the Blue & Gold found the endzone after a 24-yard pass to Matthew James. Throw in a touchback, and the Lancers had a clear 11-0 lead to end the first.
Â
It was all Marauders for the next two quarters as Preocanin connected on a pair of field goals, the second being 45-yards deep and no problem for the fifth-year kicker to close out the first-half 11-6.
Â
Â
Play continued in favour of the Marauders in the third quarter; after O'Brien and
Ryan Leder sacked Lancers quarterback Sam Girard, the Maroon were able to force a safety and follow it up with a third Preocanin field goal to tie the game at 11-11.
Â
On the ensuing possession the Marauders defence led by O'Brien, forced a change of possession. On the drive, Dueck found
Liam Putt for a 16-yard reception, following by a 20-yard rush from Allin to bring the Marauders to the Windsor seven-yard line, setting Allin up for his first touchdown of the season – the Marauders only touchdown of the game – giving the Marauders their first lead of the game, 18-11.
Â
The lead was short-lived however, as the Lancers responded to end the third quarter on the very next drive behind a series of David Adeniran rush attempts to go into the fourth tied at 18-18. A battle of field goals ensued following a series of attrition between both defenses, with the Lancers scoring with only six seconds left on the clock – overtime ensued with the score at 21-21.
Â
Possession with the Marauders first, a sack led to the Maroon counting on Preocanin who made no mistake 43-yards out to give the Marauders a 24-21 lead. Following a pair of penalties, Lancers quarterback Girard found Callin Bethune in the endzone to make the 21-yard reception giving them the win.
Â
In all the Marauders were given 18 penalties compared to the Lancers seven, resulting in a loss of 136 yards in the game.
Â
The Marauders now fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Lancers move up to 2-1. In a tightly contested OUA West Division, no clear front runner sticks out amongst the standings.
