Escaping with a nail-biting victory, the No. 7 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders outlasted the York Lions on the road, 83-82, on Saturday night.
Poor shooting was the story for much of the first half, as both sides struggled to connect from deep with the Marauders shooting 0-for-8 from three-point range, compared to the Lions 0-for-10. Possession tighten to within the key thereafter, benefiting both sides who both shot over 50% from within the paint to end the first 10-14 for the Lions.
After a neck-and-neck second quarter, the Lions jumped to a 63-49 lead in the third, on the back of a 10-0 run. But that would not be enough to separate themselves from the No. 7 Marauders. A quartet of free-throws, and a Damiann Prehay jumper highlighted an 8-1 run to end the quarter 64-57, still in the Lions favour.
The Marauders run continued into the fourth as the trio of Jordan Henry, Sefa Otchere, and Kwasi Adu Poku combined for 22 of the Marauders 26 points in the final frame to close out the game.
Henry led the Maroon with 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting, with six assists, and three steals, while Sefa Otchere added in 16 points, on an efficient 70% shooting from field-goal range, along with five boards.
The Marauders are now 9-3 on the season, tied for first on points in the OUA Central division with much of the season left to play.
NEXT UP: The Marauders will look to continue their winning ways next week as they host the Windsor Lancers on a weekday special on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8pm.
