Women's Volleyball: Nairn Stars as Marauders Sweep Lions

McMaster won all six sets played at Burridge Gym over the weekend

Continuing the momentum they built with a sweep of the Nipissing Lakers a day earlier, the Marauders kept their imperious form intact to barrel past the York Lions Sunday at Burridge Gym.

Right side Jessie Nairn put together another exceptional attacking display, as Mac rolled to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 win to improve to 10-6 in OUA play and complete a perfect weekend at home. The Marauders won all six sets played in their final home weekend of the regular season, and celebrated Seniors Day Sunday with an important victory.

The win kept McMaster's hopes of a home playoff match alive, as the Marauders sit two wins back of the Brock Badgers for the second seed in the OUA West with a match in hand. For the time being, Mac sits in the fourth and final playoff spot in the division, with three matches left to be played.

Nairn was nearly unstoppable for the Marauders Sunday, and enjoyed the most efficient hitting day of her career by knocking down 15 kills versus just a single error on 33 attempts (.424). She added four aces for good measure, regularly turning her service rotation into a nightmare for York.

Left sides Maddie Lethbridge and Rachel Woock spelled Nairn well in the win, with six and eight kills respectively.

One of McMaster's three seniors honoured before the contest alongside Woock and Katie Zutautas, libero Zoe Mackintosh put in one of her steadiest passing performances, racking up 21 digs.

After battling through a stretch of side-out volleyball to open proceedings in the first set, the Marauders seized control when Nairn took to the service line for the first time, reeling off eight consecutive points to roar into the technical timeout at 16-10 after a kill from Woock.

That was the separation that the hosts needed, as they were content to trade points with the Lions from that point forward, and needed just two of the set points they were presented with. Nairn killed to bring up eight such points, and Mac clinched the set when York's Tara Leithead missed the mark from the service line.

Turning the tables early in the second set, the Lions sprung a run of their own with Chiara Da Silva taking to the line, and forced the Marauders into a timeout trailing 12-7 after a third successive ace. The break did the hosts well, and they were back within three points at the technical timeout, before ripping off a six-point swing that included three aces from setter Rebecca Maxwell and gave Mac what proved to be a decisive lead at 19-16.

York won just three points from there, and after a pair of kills from Nairn brought up set points at 24-18, the Marauders made good on the second attempt when Leithead was errant once again from the line.

Battling to a standstill in the early stages of the third, the teams traded service runs to hit the technical timeout with just a point between them and the Marauders leading 16-15 after a kill from Nairn.

The Marauders powered to the finish line from there, and won the next five points from the break to send the Lions scampering to another timeout. Conceding just one more point, McMaster brought up match points on an ace from Woock, before the combination of Maxwell and middle Hailey Kranics conjured up a double block to end it on the first of those opportunities.

NEXT UP: McMaster begins a season-ending run of three road matches with a trip to Guelph, where the Marauders will battle the Gryphons on Friday, February 15. That match is due for first serve at 6:00 p.m. and can be seen live on OUA.tv.
