The Marauders women's basketball team picked up its sixth victory of the season, defeating the Nipissing Lakers 74-48 Saturday in North Bay.
McMaster was led by Christina Buttenham who had 24 points in the contest, converting 10 of 13 shots from the field. Sarah Gates also hit double digits, picking up 15 points.
Through the opening 10 minutes of play, there wasn't much separating the Marauders and Lakers, who ended the first quarter tied at 15. However, it was all McMaster in the second quarter.
The Marauders scored eight straight points to take a 23-15 lead, forcing the Lakers to take a timeout, but it did little to stop the Mac attack, as the Marauders continued to score at will. In all, the Marauders put up 24 points in the quarter while Nipissing scored just four. A third of McMaster's points in the quarter came from Buttenham, as she helped to stake her team to a 39-19 lead at halftime.
In the third, the Lakers cut into the Mac lead, whittling it down to 14 by the midway point of the quarter. But the Marauders went on an 11-4 run to push their lead back over 20 as they headed into the final 10 minutes.
It was all academic from there, as the Marauders added another three points to their lead by the final horn.
The victory keeps the McMaster in a tie for second place in the OUA Central division with the Ryerson Rams, who have an identical 6-2 record.
McMaster returns home for their next contest, which will take place on Friday, November 29 at the Burridge Gym, where the Marauders will take on the Brock Badgers, who they trail in the standings. Tipoff for the final home game before the winter break is set for 6:00 PM.
