Women's Soccer: Marauders Ease Past Thunderbirds in 3-0 Win

Goalkeeper Jayashree Pathak kept a clean sheet in her first appearance of 2019

Tinkering with their lineup ahead of a two-match weekend at home, the Marauders found the back of the net and a welcome three points Saturday against the Algoma Thunderbirds.

With forwards Megan Mamela and Ally Riganelli scoring before the Thunderbirds contributed an own goal in the 64th minute to seal it, the Marauders grabbed a 3-0 win in front of its former players on Alumni Day.

Goalkeeper Jayashree Pathak had little to do in her first start of the season, keeping a clean sheet without facing a single shot on goal.

Overall, McMaster directed 16 shots toward Algoma's goal and forced seven saves from Thunderbirds goalkeepers Megan Chandler and Alexis Trigiani-Kirkwood.

The win improved the Marauders to 4-4-1 on the season, while the Thunderbirds fell to 1-9.

With the run of play firmly in their favour from the opening whistle, it was no surprise when the Marauders broke through to find the first goal in the 21st minute.

Forward Lindsay Bosveld was calm in possession, creating space while Mamela made a run across from her and finding her with a square ball that the second-year Marauder duly slotted away for 1-0.

The lead swelled just eight minutes later, when an inspired play from Jade Smith paved the way for a clinical finish.

Smith carved through the centre of the Algoma formation with her trademark speed and rounded a series of defenders before ultimately laying off for Riganelli just outside the box. From there, the forward cut inside and fired a shot into the far side netting for 2-0.

Flexing their depth from that point forward, the Marauders were unconcerned to press for further goals but found one regardless when defender Yasmine Lyons put the Thunderbirds under pressure in the 64th minute.

Pushing up the touchline with pace, Lyons squared a low cross that caught Algoma by surprise and was promptly bundled into the back of the net by a defender for an own goal.

NEXT UP: McMaster and Algoma renew hostilities at Ron Joyce Stadium Sunday, with their match kicking off at noon.
