Women's Basketball: Second Half Slowdown Sinks Marauders in 75-61 Loss to Badgers

McMaster suffered its first conference loss since January

It was a tale of two vastly different halves for the Marauders Wednesday, with a forgettable second undoing a positive first 20 minutes on the road.

McMaster led Brock 40-31 at the halftime break, with rookie guard Jenna Button pouring in 16 points to lead the way. But the defending national champions scored just 21 points after the resumption of play, ultimately dropping a 75-61 decision to the Badgers.

The loss was the Marauders first in conference play since January 23, and ended a 12-game winning streak in the OUA regular season.

Finishing the night as Mac's leading scorer in a losing effort, Button concluded Wednesday with 19 points but saw her early success dampened by foul trouble in the second half and ultimately fouled out of the game in its final minute.

She shot seven of 14 from the floor and five of 10 from three-point range, while adding four rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Veteran forward Olivia Wilson notched her first double double of the season, hitting eight of 13 attempts from the field en route to 17 points, and hauling in 10 rebounds.

Grabbing control of the game late in the first quarter, Mac outscored Brock 12-6 in the final five minutes of the opener to take a 20-13 lead at its conclusion. That lead built to as many as 13 points in the second, when Button splashed a three-pointer for 31-18 at 5:54, and held at nine when the teams headed to the locker room.

But the Marauders emerged from the break cold, and it took the Badgers just six minutes to reel them in, as they tied the game at 46 when Mary Ivison knocked down one of her two buckets on the night.

Mac momentarily retook the lead at the quarter's end, but momentum had swung in favour of the hosts, and the Badgers moved ahead for the final time at 9:13, when Kristen Gallant hit a pair of free throws for 54-53.

NEXT UP: McMaster steps away from the conference season on Sunday, November 3, when the Marauders welcome Southern Connecticut State to Burridge Gym for a cross-border exhibition at 1:00 p.m.
