Women's Basketball: Gates Sets New Benchmark as Marauders Blast Past Warriors 93-44

The second-year guard had a single-game career high of 27 points in the win

With her team squeezing the Warriors relentlessly in the press, and launching devastating counters on the fast break, Sarah Gates feasted Saturday in Waterloo.

The second-year guard from Newmarket, Ont. set a new single-game career high, scoring 27 points on 10 of 19 shooting from the field, as her team romped to its most lopsided win of the season.

McMaster beat Waterloo 93-44 to emphatically erase any memory of its midweek loss in Windsor, improving to 15-3 and maintaining its hold on the top spot in the OUA West.

Gates stood as the obvious offensive leader on the floor, while teammates Linnaea Harper and Julia Hanaka chipped in totals of 17 and 15 points respectively.

Struggling mightily in the face of a concerted Mac effort to press on the defensive end, Waterloo coughed up 34 turnovers and watched McMaster score 35 points as a direct result of them.

The combination of their success in forcing turnovers, and their 44-30 advantage on the glass, saw the Marauders reap many more opportunities on the offensive end. Nearly doubling their opponents in attempts from the field, McMaster put up 87 shots to Waterloo's 48, and hit on 42 per cent of those.

Playing the majority of the game with a massive lead, after outscoring Waterloo 48-17 through the first half, McMaster was able to get significant minutes for its rotation players, including Arianne Soriano, Mia Spadafora and Evie Streight.

NEXT UP: The Marauders return home to Burridge Gym, where they will battle the Brock Badgers Wednesday, January 30 at 6:00 p.m. That game will be broadcast live on Cable 14 in Hamilton and can be seen simulcast on OUA.tv.
