Women's Volleyball: Marauders Storm Back to Beat Mustangs in Five

McMaster swept the season series against its divisional rival Sunday

Weathering the Mustangs assault in the second set, and the disappointment of losing a razor-close third, the Marauders rebounded strongly to get a win across five sets at Burridge Gym Sunday.

Overturning a 2-1 deficit, McMaster defeated Western 3-2 (25-19, 16-25, 25-27, 25-23, 15-10) to sweep the season series with its fierce divisional rival to move to 6-4 in OUA play.

Right side Jessie Nairn led the way offensively for the Marauders with 17 kills and 23 points, including five aces and a solo block.

Rachel Woock was the most efficient Mac attacker on the afternoon, hitting .333 while killing 13 of her 27 attempts and adding a solo block for 14 points.

The Marauders opened brightly on Sunday, chasing memories of Saturday's loss with a strong opening set that saw the hosts commit just two hitting errors versus 13 kills, while hitting .458 as a group.

Robinson enjoyed the best showing of any on court, with four kills and an ace in the frame to lead all scorers with five points, hitting .375 individually.

Despite a lead of just a single point as the teams battled their way to the technical timeout, McMaster built upon it thereafter, forcing Western into a quick timeout after winning the next two points from the break.

Rebecca Maxwell dumped for her first point of the afternoon to bring up five set points at 24-19, and the Marauders needed just one of them, as Western's Carly Kimmett blasted an attack well long of the back line to bring the opening set to an end.

Momentum swung drastically in the second, with the Mustangs racing out of the changeover and into a 7-2 lead before Tim Louks called timeout in an attempt to stem the bleeding.

The trend continued well into the technical timeout, with Western holding a nine-point advantage at the mandated break, and saw the lead grow to as many as 11 before the set's end.

Ultimately, despite a spirited fightback from the hosts that spawned a Western timeout two points from the finish line, the Mustangs took the set 25-16 after Nairn's attack sailed wide.

Where McMaster's offence had been remarkably clean in the first set, Western's took over that mantle in the second, committing just two errors and hitting .409 to turn the tables.

Starting slowly yet again in the third, the Marauders were chased to another early timeout but worked their way back into the set as it approached its mid-point, and trailed by just one at the technical timeout.

A kill from Woock leveled the set at 21 and forced a timeout from Western, and the teams battled tooth and nail to the finish line, necessitating bonus points.

There, Mac dodged a pair of set points before Western made use of a third, as Rachel Grove's serve went unreturned for 27-25 and gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Both offences ground to a halt in the fourth, as long rallies and staunch defence prevailed on both sides of the net.

Early momentum resided with the hosts, who led 9-5 and chased the Mustangs to a timeout, before the visitors regained their composure and fought back to within striking distance at 16-14 as the teams entered the technical.

There was nothing to choose between the teams late, and it was ultimately a four-point run by the Marauders that vaulted the home side ahead from a 23-21 deficit and forced a fifth set, as Western's final attack of the set found the tape.

Keeping the initiative to open the fifth, Mac forced Western into a timeout at 9-7 after the Mustangs star middle Kelsey Veltman watched an attack sail long.

From there, the hosts kept their composure to see the match to its conclusion, ultimately taking the abbreviated fifth set by a five-point margin.

NEXT UP: McMaster continues the home stand in a week's time, welcoming the Brock Badgers to Burridge Gym for a 1:00 p.m. matinee. That match can be seen live on OUA.tv.
