Women's Soccer: Marauders Fall 1-0 to Lions Despite Second Half Barrage

McMaster was unable to solve York's Tamara Orlando despite seven shots on goal

Down a goal after a quiet opening half, the Marauders came to life in the second but were unable to find the necessary finish in front of net Friday.

McMaster suffered its second loss of 2018, and first at home, in dropping a 1-0 decision to York at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Lions striker Jessica Lush scored the game's opening goal in just the sixth minute, heading home a cross to give her team the early and decisive lead.

Solid when called upon in the second half, York goalkeeper Tamara Orlando made seven saves in keeping a clean sheet, as the Lions moved to the top of the OUA West standings with the win.

McMaster produced just two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, but was a vastly-improved side in the second, testing Orlando five times and creating countless openings in attack.

But a lack of finishing proved to be the difference, as the Lions withstood long stretches of pressure in the second half to secure all three points.

Lush's goal saw her shed a marker in the Marauders box and neatly head home a cross inside the game's first 10 minutes, as the Lions opened as the more organized and aggressive team Friday.

The visitors' lead was nearly doubled in the 25th minute when Athanasia Papadopoulos met an incisive through ball behind the McMaster back line, but she could only scuff the ensuing shot wide. Less than two minutes later, another York shot blasted just high of McMaster's crossbar, as York continued to press its advantage.

Down just a single goal after the break, the Marauders emerged from the tunnel with new energy, and immediately threatened to find an equalizer.

In the 49th minute, forward Stephanie Roberts was sent through on goal and saw her initial shot stopped, only to see it bobble to a teammate and be similarly blocked aside by Orlando.

Roberts was through once again in the 54th, but pressure from her marker and Orlando denied her the chance for a clean shot.

That was the closest that the Marauders would come, as the Lions successfully defended behind their only goal.

NEXT UP: The Marauders travel to Guelph on Sunday, September 9 for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against the Gryphons.
