Men's Soccer: Marauders Strike Twice in Opening Half to Down Hawks 2-1

Joe Guindy's first career goal stood as the winner for McMaster

A young roster short on OUA experience navigated its way to victory Friday, as the Marauders opened the conference schedule at Ron Joyce Stadium Friday with a close-fought 2-1 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks.

One of the few veterans in the squad, winger Carlo DiFeo opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute, before second-year forward Joe Guindy doubled the team's advantage 10 minutes later with the first goal of his McMaster career.

Low on scoring chances, and with the two goalkeepers seeing just five shots on goal between them, the game came alive when the Hawks scored through Matt Menko in the 85th minute to reignite the challenge.

DiFeo showed no nerves in calmly dispatching the resulting spot kick after Laurier was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, finding side netting before dramatically racing to the sidelines to embrace his teammates out of uniform and in the Ron Joyce Stadium stands.

Guindy followed suit when he put the finishing touches to a deft passing play through the middle of the park, tapping the ball home before wheeling toward the rowdy group of teammates for a celebration.

Menko's late strike ramped up tensions around the grounds, but it was too little, too late for the visitors, who came away without a point for their efforts on the day.

NEXT UP: The Marauders head to Waterloo Sunday to battle the Warriors in an afternoon match slated for a 1:45 pm kickoff.
