Men's Basketball: Comeback Effort Flatlines in the Fourth as Marauders Fall to Lions 91-81

McMaster climbed to within three late in the third before York pulled away

Stuck 20 points through a half at home, McMaster inspired hope in the Burridge Gym crowd with a furious third-quarter fightback.

But, after closing to within three points late in the third, the Marauders proved unable to overhaul the deficit, and ultimately fell 91-81 to the York Lions.

The loss was McMaster's third straight, moving them to 4-6 in OUA play, which situates the Marauders fourth in the OUA West division standings.

Veteran forward Connor Gilmore posted a game high of 25 points in a losing effort, hitting six of 16 attempts from the floor and two of seven from the field, while making all 11 of his trips to the free throw line.

A blistering performance from the floor staked the Lions to a shocking 20-point lead through a half at Burridge Gym, as York hit 22 of 39 attempts (56 per cent) and eight of 17 from beyond the arc.

The prime beneficiaries of that pace to open Friday were Gianmarco Luciana and Prince Kamunga, who combined for six triples and a total of 21 points between them to lead the Lions.

Gilmore had 12 points for the Marauders through 20 minutes, hitting all seven of his trips to the charity stripe to do his part for the hosts.

But McMaster found itself stuck 20 at the half, trailing York 56-36 and in need of a spark to turn momentum in the second.

Early signs were good as the teams resumed play, with Mac laying down a 7-0 run to send York scampering to a timeout with 7:20 to play in the third and the visitors' lead down to 13 at 56-43.

Gilmore continued to be the driver of the Marauders offence, and added an emphatic shot to their comeback attempt by drilling a three in transition to narrow the Lions lead to 11 at 61-50.

With York reeling, McMaster continued to take advantage, as successive turnovers by the visitors were turned into a Sefa Otchere bucket and a pair of Jordan Henry free throws, making it a one-possession game at 63-60 with 1:30 to play in the third.

Luciani produced a circus shot to stem the tide at the buzzer, hitting a fadeaway jumper while falling to the floor as York carried a 67-61 lead into the fourth.

From there, the visitors pulled away to secure a victory that was once very much in doubt. Ripping off a 7-2 run to open the fourth, York outscored McMaster 24-20 in the final 10 minutes and made the final few a formality at Burridge Gym.

NEXT UP: McMaster closes out the 2018 calendar year by welcoming the Queen's Gaels to Burridge Gym on Saturday, December 1.
