Women's Volleyball: Marauders Fall to Blues in Five-Set Nail Biter to Open OUA Season

Jessie Nairn had a team high of 11 kills in the loss

Treating fans to a playoff atmosphere in the very first match of the OUA season, two traditional rivals battled through five absorbing sets in Toronto Friday before the Varsity Blues came out on the winning end.

McMaster led through three sets, but ultimately fell in five, dropping its first match of the new campaign 17-25, 25-15, 25-16, 12-25, 17-19 on the road.

The Marauders were led by right side Jessie Nairn in a losing effort, who posted a team high 11 kills and 15.5 points, adding two aces and two and a half blocks.

Left side Maddie Lethbridge was McMaster's only other player to reach double digits with 10.5 points, as both teams struggled to find their rhythm offensively. The Marauders hit just 11 per cent as a team, with the Blues faring only slightly better at 14 per cent.

Leading all players on the defensive side, Mac libero Zoe Mackintosh racked up 28 digs and added five assists.

After dropping the opening set, the Marauders played their cleanest volleyball of the match in the second and third, reaching an offensive peak in a third set that saw them hit for nine kills and no errors while achieving a team hitting average of .391.

Their rates dropped precipitously after that high, however, and the Blues raced to victory in the fourth by a 13-point margin before springing the comeback in a tense fifth set to edge it by the minimum.

NEXT UP: McMaster heads back on the road on Sunday, November 4 for a meeting with the Windsor Lancers, with first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
