Men's Volleyball: Mac Crushes Waterloo in OUA Final Rematch

The Marauders piled a third loss onto the reeling Warriors with a Friday sweep at Burridge Gym.

A rivalry known for its long, intense chapters over the past few seasons was treated to one of its shortest and most decisive episodes Friday, as the Marauders and Waterloo Warriors met at Burridge Gym.

Disorganized out of the gate, the Warriors were outclassed early and often by the Marauders, who cruised to a 25-12, 25-20, 25-14 victory to level their conference record at 1-1.

The two teams met in the 2017 OUA Championship in March, but eight months did no favours to the Warriors, who suffered their third loss in as many matches to open the 2017-18 season.

Fifth-year outside Brandon Koppers turned his match high of 20 touches into eight kills and added an ace and four solo blocks for 13 points in the win, while right side Matt Passalent also broke double digits with 10 points including six kills, two aces and two blocks.

McMaster forced Waterloo onto the back foot immediately Friday, embarking on a 13-3 run to open the match and induce full-scale changes to the Waterloo lineup on the floor. The Warriors never recovered from there in set one, and the combination of a Koppers kill and Passalent service ace sealed it in style for the hosts by a 13-point margin.

Modest improvements offensively saw the Warriors find respectability in the second set, but the Marauders were also beginning to fire more efficiently, with 10 errors against four errors as a group.

A late run had the visitors within three points, but Waterloo imploded at the set's conclusion, and the combination of an Andrew Smondulak hitting error and Waylon Chen handling error saw the Warriors gift the second away.

Showing no sign of relenting early in the third, Mac reeled off a 9-3 run to open the set and effectively bury Waterloo, chasing the Warriors to a timeout after a Matt Mawdsley hitting error.

There was little resistance left in the visitors, and Andrew Richards' violent kill on match point was a suitably emphatic closer to a dominant performance from the Marauders.

NEXT UP: McMaster embarks on their first road trip of the season on Saturday, Nov. 4, travelling to Guelph for an 8:00 p.m. match against the Gryphons.
