Men's Basketball: Shoveller Leads Gaels Past Marauders 99-87

The Queen's forward nullified a sterling, 27-point night from Mac guard Miles Seward

Mike Shoveller's big night was enough to snuff out another Miles Seward show, as the Queen's Gaels handed the Marauders their first loss of the season in Kingston Friday.

The Gaels forward had 31 points, shooting 11 of 14 from the field, as Queen's defeated McMaster 99-87 at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.

Bettering his 23-point season opener, Seward posted 27 points on 10 of 18 from the field and five of 11 from three-point range in the loss.

Kareem Collins added 19 and had a team high eight boards, while veteran guard David McCulloch had 18 points off the bench in his return from injury.

McMaster travelled to Kingston for their first game of their weekend road trip having opened the season with a victory at home against the Guelph Gryphons a week ago. Meanwhile, the Gaels entered the game Friday night hoping to remain undefeated at home after they dominated Lakehead, 95-68.

There were nine lead changes in the see-saw first 30 minutes of play inside the Kingston Athletic and Recreation Centre, as Mac and Queen's stayed within striking distance of one another.

It was not until the second half that Queen's began to put serious distance between themselves and McMaster, helped in large part by Shoveller, whose 31 points was complemented by 11 rebounds.

The Marauders would found themselves struggling to claw back into the game, as the Gaels stretched out a 15-point lead with just under a minute and a half remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Gaels were able to put a halt on a Marauders comeback after breaking through McMaster's full-court press and finding Harry Range for a layup.

The Marauders will look to give head coach Patrick Tatham his first road win of the season when they York on Saturday to tipoff against the Lions inside the Tait McKenzie Centre. The Lions match 1-1 records with the Marauders as the teams tip off at 8:00 p.m.
