Shaping the Future: McMaster Marauders look to ignite community support in Giving Tuesday campaign

HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders are set to launch their third annual 'Giving Tuesday' challenge on November 28, a day dedicated to raising crucial funds that will elevate the student-athlete experience and contribute to a culture of growth and development.

This initiative is a rallying call to McMaster alumni, the university community, and dedicated Marauder fans to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of McMaster varsity sport through financial contributions at marauders.ca/GivingTuesday.

"Our goal is to ensure that the dream of competing in elite university sport for McMaster is not only realized by our student-athletes, but enhanced through every possible avenue," says Shawn Burt, Director of Athletics & Recreation. "Donor funding has a profound impact on the growth and development of our student-athletes, both as players on the field of play and individuals in all aspects of their lives. It supports our commitment to fostering an environment where every Marauder can thrive."

The foundation for a team's success lies in the cohesion among coaches, teammates, fans, alumni, and community members. The garnered support acts as a catalyst for the program's achievements, longevity, and the quality experiences for athletes. On behalf of the McMaster Women's Soccer team, we express gratitude for showing us what it's like to be a Marauder and for providing enhancements for today's athletes and tomorrow's leaders."
Donors are empowered to channel their support to specific teams through dedicated funding pages that will have a direct impact on their program of choice. When considering making a donation, supporters can explore each team's individual case for support - detailing their unique challenges, needs and team aspirations. These cases can be found on teams' respective funding pages and provide insight into how contributions can make a tangible difference.

"As student-athletes, we would be nowhere near as successful without the generosity, kindness, and support of our donors," says fourth-year fastpitch student-athlete Abbileigh Wikston.

"While having the opportunity to play the sport I love for McMaster is a gift in itself, the true treasure lies in our community. Our donors play a pivotal role in granting us access to the resources we need to perform at our best, and for that we are eternally grateful."

Every gift made during the Giving Tuesday campaign will help unlock challenge matching funds that may be awarded, such as a $500 bonus for each team that raises at least $1,000, as well as $1,000 awards for the team with the most donors and the highest raising team.

Varun Jain, a member of the men's rugby team says he's grateful for the environment the McMaster community offers.

"On behalf of all McMaster student-athletes, thank you for not only enhancing our success, but also creating opportunities for lasting memories, shaping our character development, and fostering camaraderie—an overall enriching experience made possible by your invaluable support."

The McMaster community exceeded expectations in 2022, raising over $76,662 during the Giving Tuesday challenge. This overwhelming support directly contributed to mental health priorities, athletic financial awards, off-season training opportunities, equipment acquisitions, and additional resources, setting the stage for an historically successful 2022-23 season that saw five OUA conference championships, a National Championship, and nearly 500 student-athletes recognized for academic achievement at the league,  OUA or U SPORTS level.

The support from donors not only helps to afford student-athletes this opportunity but also fosters the growth of all McMaster student-athletes on and off the fields, courts, and mats. On behalf of the McMaster wrestling team, and of all McMaster Marauders; we thank you for contributing to our success."

Tim Louks, Interim Associate Director, High Performance, emphasizes the significance of donor support in shaping the student-athlete experience.

"Each team has identified areas of need that will significantly improve the overall well-being and performance of our student-athletes," says Louks. "From nutritional coaching to leadership development to equipment and training aids, these targeted enhancements will contribute to the holistic development of our student-athletes, helping McMaster stand out in shaping the leaders of tomorrow."

New for 2023 is the opportunity for supporters to make a direct impact on either the McMaster Camps Scholarship program, or the McMaster Performance and Wellness Workshop.

The Kids to Camp Scholarship Program provides opportunities for local youth who otherwise cannot afford camp, to attend a McMaster A&R Camp program that helps set the foundation for social, physical and emotional development.

McMaster's Performance and Wellness Workshop is a two-day event dedicated to promoting student-athlete physical and mental wellness by providing seminars from industry leaders, hands-on learning experiences and other invaluable educational tools to help them thrive.

"The growth and success of our teams depend on the collective support of the McMaster community," adds Burt. "We invite all Marauders, friends, and supporters to join us on Giving Tuesday and make a lasting impact on the lives of our student-athletes. Your generosity will propel them towards achieving their dreams both on and off the field."
