In recent field hockey Canada news, Kathryn Williams, Assistant Coach with the McMaster Marauders field hockey team, was named to the Canadian Women's Indoor National Team roster as a goalkeeper and captain.
Williams and the Women's Indoor National team are headed to Spring City, PA., where they will face off against Uruguay, Guyana, USA, and Argentina for the Indoor Pan American Cup from June 25-27th. The Pan American Cup, which was postponed due to the pandemic, serves as the qualifier for the 2022 Indoor World Cup which will take place in Belgium.
"Right now, I'm feeling overwhelmingly privileged to have the opportunity to compete with my teammates at this qualifier," said Williams. "It's always an honour to be selected to represent my country and play amongst the top indoor players in the Pan American countries."
Williams is an established field hockey player and coach. After joining the sport in high school, the Burlington, Ont., native hit the ground running. She soon began to get noticed for her natural talent and skill, which brought her to play at the university level with the Toronto Varsity Blues. Williams captained her university team for three consecutive seasons, while also winning three OUA Championships, securing a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship in Guelph in 2010, and being named a CIS All-Canadian in 2013.
In 2010, Williams went on the join the Canadian Women's Indoor National Field Hockey team and has been playing with the squad since. To his resume, Williams helped the squad capture the 2014 Indoor Pan Am Cup in Uruguay, and was named the 2017 Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the Indoor Pan American Cup in Guyana.
"Some of my teammates are also my best friends and it's so special to share these moments with them," explained the national team player. "We're always working to leave our indoor national program in a better place and inspiring the next generation of athletes."
In line with inspiring the next generation of athletes, for the past four years, Williams has been coaching the McMaster Marauders field hockey team, alongside Head Coach Jonathan Roberts. The pair have playing an integral role in preparing and training the team, and in turn assisted the squad in securing a spot in the OUA league for the 2021-22 season.
"I'm looking forward to the start of the tournament on Friday, and qualifying for the Indoor World Cup in Belgium next February," Williams exclaimed.
