MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY FINISHES THIRD, WOMEN SIXTH AT U SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP

QUEBEC CITY, QUE. - The McMaster Marauders men's and women's cross country teams earned third and sixth place overall team finishes this afternoon at the U SPORTS National Championship.

Held at the historic Plains of Abraham, the course featured a number of turns and hills that made for a challenging race.

This year's OUA Champion Andrew Davies had the best performance for the Marauders, finishing just shy of the podium in fourth place in the men's 8K with a time of 24:38, just 10.5 seconds off of race winner Mitchell Ubene of the Guelph Gryphons. However, Davies would earn the opportunity to stand on the podium with the rest of his team, as the men's team earned bronze medals with a collective score of 79 points, with host Université Laval, and Guelph, finishing first and second respectively.

Championship Saturday began with the women's 8K, in which Laval claimed both the team and individual gold medals. Including the women's Most Valuable Runner Jessy Lacourse, Laval had three racers finish in the top four, and four in the top 10.

Fifth-year senior Erin Mawhinney was the first Marauder to cross the finish line in 28th place with a time of 30:23.

Following not far behind Mawhinney were third-year runner Caroline Forbes and London's Victoria Lamb, who placed back-to-back in 40th and 41st place.

Coming within just 46 seconds of Forbes and Lamb were McMaster's four other racers — Hannah Goodjohn in 46th place, Sarah Nolan in 51st, Emma Waddington in 56th, and Kaitlyn Treleaven in 70th.

After the women's race, it was the men's chance to take to the Plains, and it was Laval again who snagged the team gold. Earning the individual first place medal was Guelph's Ubene, who led his team to silver.

For the third place Marauders, Davies had a stellar performance, finishing with a time of 24:38.

He was closely followed by veteran runner Max Turek, who placed 10th with a time of 24:56.

Contributing also to McMaster total team score was Ryan Tyrrell in 16th place, Alex Drover in 22nd, and Sam Nusselder in 27th, all of whom finished within just one minute of Davies.

Evan Ubene and Joshua McGillivray also ran for the Marauders, placing 63rd and 99th, respectively.

The U Sports Championship marks the end of the cross country season for universities across Canada, who will pick back up next fall.
