Schertzer earned seven letters at McMaster in football and basketball after a brilliant career as a high school athlete in the Kitchener area. At Mac he was on two Ontario championship teams. After graduation he made a career in education and coached teams in a wide variety of sports as well as serving two years as president of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations.
