A dominating member of the Men’s Water Polo team from 1996 to 2001, Mathieu Whelan was named to the league All-Star team for all five of his varsity seasons. He was a second-team selection in his first year, and a first-team pick for the next four seasons. Over his career in the pool, Whelan helped the Marauders to the medal podium each year. His teams won three bronze medals, one silver medal and in 1999 he powered McMaster to the OUAA Championship.
In his final season, Whelan shattered the OUA scoring record with 72 goals in 12 conference games, breaking the previous mark of 54. In addition to his Marauder exploits, Whelan represented Canada in several international competitions.
