Just as his father had done a quarter of a century earlier, John came to McMaster and was an instant track success. In his freshman year he won the Hec Phillips Memorial Trophy as top Ontario track athlete. John proceeded to anchor the 4x400 metre relay team, which in 1960 set a new Canadian native record. That year, John also captained Mac's championship track team and became known as one of Canada's premier hurdlers.
