MacTaggart, known to teammates as 'Mac T', played football and basketball in each of his years at Mac, serving as captain of the 1952 football team and leading the basketball team and league in scoring. He also played with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in their 1953 Grey Cup season. His other pursuits included lacrosse with the Orillia Terriers at the senior level.
