Spoar played a total of nine seasons as an outstanding centre on the Marlin hockey team. He was a key player on the 1961-62 Ontario Championship team, and the 1962-63 undefeated squad that won the first ever C.I.A.U. national title. After his playing days, he served as an assistant coach for seven years, and had three different stints as the Marlin's head coach.
