A record-setting sprinter, Frank Baines raced in the Maroon & Grey between 1962 and 1966 as a member of the indoor and outdoor track & field teams. On the outdoor circuit, Baines swept the sprints at the CIAU national championships in both 1963 and 1965.  He captured gold medals in the 100 and 220-yard events, and ran the anchor leg for the winning 4 X 100-yard relay team in each season. In 1963, Baines was presented with the Hec Philips Trophy, as the outstanding athlete at the national championships. Over his varsity career Baines set McMaster records for the 100 and 220-yard sprints (outdoor) and the 60-yard event (indoor). 

On the national stage, Baines took the silver medal in the 200-metres at the 1964 Canadian Olympic trials.
