Head of the university's history department from 1920 to 1951, Dr. New had a keen interest in varsity sports. Among his many contributions to athletics were: the development of an innovative recruiting system to attract high school athletes, gaining senior intercollegiate status for McMaster, and persuading the board of governors to hire Arthur Burridge as first full time Athletic Director.
