McMaster's Forbes twins made a successful return to North America after a six-week triathlon tour of Europe, as Taylor Forbes finished tops among U23 competitors and third overall at the 2015 CAMTRI Triathlon American Cup event in Magog, Quebec on July 25, while brother Austen crossed the line just three seconds behind.
Magog features non-Canadian athletes, but also serves as a Canadian championship event, and the Forbes brothers accomplished the top spots among Canadians at the race. Several older racers, including Mac alumnus Andrew Yorke and the elder statesman of the Canadian national team, Kyle Jones, skipped Magog with the 2016 Olympic Trials looming.
For the Forbes brothers, the results in Magog stand as the latest bright spot in a whirlwind summer of intense training and competition that saw them launch a six-week European stint in the Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. Their most prestigious stop was in Holten, Netherlands, where the two competed in a European Cup event on July 4, with Austen getting the better of brother Taylor and finishing sixth.
Having excelled in Magog, the Forbes brothers will now compete in the Elite/U23 Provincial Championships at Ottawa's Mooney Bay on August 1, with the hope of qualification for the Canadian national team bound for the ITU World Championships in Chicago, Illinois. They and the other elite junior racers would compete in the U23 event on September 17.
